Social enterprise thinking prioritizes people and the planet over shareholder gain, operating through a human-centered design approach and design thinking process. Social enterprises span every industry and can be funded by various means, provided they generate revenue while creating a positive impact. AOS's project goal is intrinsically human-focused with a substantial social component, which led to the use of social enterprise thinking in developing a solution for AOS
The smart lock prototype was developed to showcase the solution's design and functionality to the client. The process involved three key stages: rendered sketches, 3D modeling, and life-size prototyping, culminating in detailed digital renders to illustrate the smart lock’s features and usability.
Digital sketches were created, incorporating design inspirations to align with the desired aesthetic. These sketches provided a visual reference for the smart lock's form and design.
3D modeling was used to design both internal and external components of the smart lock, resulting in precise representations. The models were rendered based on the final sketches, incorporating materials from the design inspiration phase.
The prototype was created using 3D printing, followed by sanding to smooth the surface. Bondo was applied to cover imperfections, and additional sanding with finer grits achieved a metallic texture before painting.
The digital prototype was captured in the ideal environment to demonstrate its usability and real-world application, providing stakeholders with a comprehensive view of the smart lock's functionality.

The design process led to the development of the AOS app and smart lock, a comprehensive solution tailored to the needs of AOS and its users. The app's marketplace integrates seamlessly with the smart lock and security systems, allowing AOS servicers to perform tasks inside and outside homes or businesses. This integrated approach enhances security and convenience, helping to reduce poverty and increase financial freedom by providing reliable and flexible service delivery.
The AOS app enhances user experience and financial well-being with features like the AOS Marketplace for service requests and creation, and the Ask and Answer page for skill sharing. A unified app structure allows easy role-switching, providing access to multiple income streams. Security features like the Lock Activity Tracker and Wireless Entry Schedule ensure safe service delivery, while the Service Tracker maintains quality, fostering customer satisfaction and repeat business.
The AOS smart lock is a deadbolt lock that can be unlocked wirelessly with the help of AOS's Wi-Fi connector. The lock provides keyless entry for homeowners and AOS service providers, along with an auto-lock feature for added security. It syncs with alarms to deactivate and reactivate during scheduled access times and includes a key entry option for emergencies. The lock is also designed for easy installation, making it accessible to all users.

The project concluded successfully, with stakeholders expressing strong approval of the mobile app and lock prototype. They believed the lock could be effectively produced to facilitate in-home user access. While some were concerned about the lock's practicality for commercial use, stakeholders felt it would suffice for small businesses.
This experience underscored the importance of considering both company maturity and priorities during product development. For AOS, which is still in its startup phase, prioritizing robust security measures was a critical decision. Establishing trust with users is vital for new companies like AOS.
This project highlighted the significance of assessing risks and creating effective solutions to mitigate them. While a less security-focused approach could have been taken for the minimum viable product (MVP), doing so would have heightened the risk of harming the brand's reputation.
